About Me
Evolution of the User Interface
0Here’s a 8 minute video I came across proposing a new, multi-touch, desktop computer interface, dubbed “10/GUI”. While 10/GUI does sound exciting, there are a few small drawbacks that I see in the concept. The operating system uses a 3 and 4 finger drags and pinches as a core means of navigation, sometimes even requiring both hands. While I love the idea, how do we make this work for those who don’t have 10 fingers?
Up and Running!
0So after nearly a week without my website, http://www.hostmds.com has restored my service and ALL files (even the ones I have cleverly hidden from the web). While I could sit here and write a scathing review of their slow response and lack of customer notification, I remind myself of the old adage: “you get what you pay for.” Considering there is no limit to how many databases I can host, the amount of data I store, or the amount of data I transfer, and factoring in that I am able to host multiple domains on the same server without making it blatantly obvious to the visitor, I think I’m getting a fairly good deal. Since I know 95% of my visitors are led here by my RSS feed, which is hosted off-site, I can easily redirect my traffic to another, temporary location. If this site were actually generating revenue for me, I’d be hosting somewhere more reliable.
My apologizes for the outage and lack of updates while I was down, but it led me to a few great writing ideas I’ll probably take up in the future.
- My week without a website
- My week without a phone
- My week without e-mail
Hopefully next week, I’ll be writing a couple new articles I’ve had in my head for a while:

Owning a Fancy-Pants Camera Doesn’t Make you a Photographer!
1So a couple weeks ago I went downtown Green Bay with my friend Dan to learn about how my new camera & lens behave in low light. The photos (as previously stated) are on my Flickr account. While I think most of these pictures are fairly decent, and I am proud of them, I cannot and will not refer to myself as a professional photographer. Sure, I now have a “professional” camera, but calling me a professional photographer is like calling every guy with a singlet a WWE Superstar.
A few weeks ago, I was playing a wedding in the valley where they had the most unprofessional photographer I have ever seen. I don’t want to go into too many specifics and end up pointing her out, but for one, she didn’t have an off-camera flash, an essential for any dark room. Without it, all of the pictures are going to have a nicely or overexposed subject, and a dark, unrecognizable background.
While I can understand cost containment or issues with lost or broken gear, she didn’t even look like she was trying. Durring the dance, she took several pictures without looking through the viewfinder, on a camera that doesn’t have a LiveView feature! She literally, spent 2 hours walking circles around the dance floor, taking pictures that she didn’t even frame. I’m not just speculating here either, we talked earlier in the night, and she showed me her Nikon D80, the same camera I have!
Now I understand cutting costs and sticking to a budget… Heck, I’m usually trying to apply myself to the low-budget market because it is both large, and low-maintenance. Photographs can only be taken once, and on an important day like your wedding day, you should have someone who will at least try to capture some of the memories. For that unfortunate couple, they paid someone who claimed to be a professional, who carried semi-professional equipment. They would have been better off buying a few dozen disposable cameras and letting their guests, take good pictures. (or at least try)
What I Learned at #NNSMB
4As previously announced, I spent the majority of yesterday morning at Titletown Brewing, representing @CameraCorner at the New North Social Media Breakfast. I had a great time and got the opportunity to meet a lot of great, influential people that I’ve been following online for months. I also had the opportunity to share my personal goals for Camera Corner, and learn quite a bit about what other businesses are doing in the social media market. Abby Gutowski compiled a list of tweets related to the event, but the real benefits of the event came to me after the formalities were finished.
I’m constantly questioning whether my online efforts are paying off, as the hard number that I am able to tie to my online efforts equates to far less than a single percentage of our revenues, and when I compare that number to what is produced with print adds in the Sunday paper, you’ve gotta admit that social networking doesn’t seem to be worth the time. It turns out that several of the others at the event have seen similar results. Sometimes I just need a little reminder that a social network, whether online or in real life, doesn’t always produce instant results, but keeps a name fresh.
For me, it is easy to engage in conversation online, but in person, I’ve developed what my girlfriend has come to call “performance mode” or “sales mode”, which I have always denied until now. As Ross said on one of his video blogs, there is a difference between talking with someone, and talking at them. This is exactly what Trisha has told me on many occasions, and it is something that I certainly want to work on controlling more so it doesn’t get me in trouble.
I made some comments “in performer mode” that some people have taken an offense to regarding online privacy. I have talked with a few of the offended parties, and for the most part smoothed everything over, but I still stand behind the message I was trying to convey. Perhaps I blew up the story a little bit, but my intention was to convey a message with a strong emotional tie… I heard some of the comments in the room, stalker was one of them, and that was exactly the message I was trying to convey at the time. Your social networking activity, if not locked down properly, is an open door for anyone to stumble upon. Why wouldn’t a hiring manager take a peek at what is available about you online?
I do think I was slightly misquoted, I believe the statement “Search results don’t lie” was attributed to me somewhere, and I just want to set the record straight… If I said it, I retract it… Search results are only as good as the content out on the web. If you haven’t already seen Chris Hecker’s rant about media outlets, I highly recommend you check it out now!
The New North 5-18-10
1I have been asked to represent Camera Corner / Connecting Point on a New North discussion panel next Tuesday, May 18th. This appears to be a private event, as I cannot find any information about it on their site or anywhere else in the blogosphere.
The New North is a non-profit organization dedicated to uniting the businesses and strengthening the economy of Outagamie, Winnebago, Calumet, Waupaca, Brown, Shawano, Oconto, Marinette, Door, Kewaunee, Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Marquette, Florence, Menominee, and Waushara counties.

2I’ve been getting a whole lot of comments lately, most of which turn out to be spam. What’s your favorite spam-blocking WordPress plugin?
Not Writing Today
1I bought my first DSLR today! I’ll be out shooting my D80, cleaning, and hanging out with Monty. Catch me on Twitter, or e-mail me if you need to talk. I’ll be back tomorrow!
Being Selective (and Annoying)
1As a DJ, you are expected to know all of the newest, hottest tracks. To be quite honest, more music is released commercially than I could ever want to listen to. On April 20, 2010 the music industry cranked out 30 new albums. Another 21 were released today, and on May 4th, there will be another 29 more albums to catch up with. The list goes on. There is no way I am going to thoroughly listen to 80 new albums in two weeks time, and know every song well enough to add them to my set.
I have a system that I use to discover music. Pandora doesn’t cut it for me, as the library is too large to ensure enough fresh music, and Mufin has too many other issues to mention here. First, I filter the list. Let’s take a look at what was released today.

I’m really only familiar with B.o.B., Drowning Pool, Melissa Etheridge, Peter Frampton, Gogol Bordello, Hole, and Lonestar, so I’ll listen to them first. Everyone else goes on hold until they get radio play. The first two times by, I’ll listen to the entire album. The third time around, if I don’t recognize a song by the 20 second mark, I skip it, give it 1 star in iTunes, and probably never play it again.
This sounds harsh to some (and annoying to my girlfriend who hears me skipping songs so frequently), but the reality is that in one night, I’m only going to play 70 songs at the most… I want every song I play to be recognized and danced to immediately. I want that “Dancing Queen” effect on every song, where they hear 2 seconds, know what’s coming, and jump out of their chairs. And you know what, sometimes I’m wrong… Sometimes, I blow away a track that deserves a better rank and more time than I give it, but if I DO miss something, it’s only for one or two shows. The Hodown Showdown is a perfect example of a song I missed, because I wasn’t playing to the audience that cared… But once I realized what I was missing, I corrected the problem before it became a problem again.
I also listen to the playlists from Promo Only, the leading distributor of music to radio stations and Disc Jockey services. They will give me the best tracks from all of the artists I choose not to listen to, which will sometimes lead me to checking out the rest of their album as well. How do I check out all of this music without breaking the bank? Check out LaLa, a music service that streams each track free of charge once, with the option to buy a DRM free, high-quality MP3 download, or unlimited streaming rights for a far lower price.
UPDATE: The LaLa music service has been bought out and shut down by Apple Computer. I still haven’t forgiven them.
Another Prom
0Well, I’m off for the evening, heading to Algoma for the AHS Prom, starting tonight at 8:00. My anticipated track-of-the-night? Miley Cyrus’s Hodown Throwdown. It was the most heavily requested song at LCHS, and I didn’t have it on me… Tonight I’ll have no excuse.
Cut, We Have Picture!
0I spent 3 hours tonight doing the A-B switching on that wrestling video so we can do our commentary tracks tomorrow night. All I have to say is that if your doing a linear edit… NEVER PAUSE… EVER… I COULD HAVE BEEN DONE AN HOUR AGO YOU. @#@#$$^w%$^#$%^&@#@!!!!
